Ansonia is a city located on the Naugatuck River, immediately north of Derby, and northwest of New Haven. Originally part of the town of Derby, in 1844, Anson Green Phelps expanded the old borough of Birmingham (the present downtown of the city of Derby) which eventually became known as Ansonia. Known as the “Copper City”, due to the its heavy manufacturing industry, was incoporated as a town in 1889, and a city in 1893.
